Plants 365, week 42 + 43

Where the fuck has October gone??????

New to this page or missed some of Plants 365 and want to catch up? I recommend starting from the beginning with week 1.

Hi! I’m Jenn – botanist, CEO, potty mouth.

This is my “plant diary”, where every day for the entire year I will log my experience with plants. I’m not sure what that’s actually going to look like, but it doesn’t really matter – I just want to talk plants.

But first, here’s a little context about me: I fucking love Champagne. I don’t really like reading fiction but can digest it in the podcast form. I listen, read and observe a lot. I happily overeat carbs. I call myself a botanist because I have been a professional (as in, I pay my bills by) horticulturist for the past 15 years. The past 4+ years I have been researching plants with indigenous Mayan and Garifuna cultures in Belize – mostly focusing on organically farmed Cacao theobroma and jungle-grown Yam root. This means lots of time spent working on family farms, lots of jungle hikes, lots of eating weird things and even a bot fly in the arm (I dare you to google bot fly). Vanilla planifolia and Crocus sativus are my jam right now. My hands-on background is florals, farming, herbalism, horticulture and jungle growth. I’ve dabbled in greenhouse growing (3 years in community college, greenhouse management degree), grafting and stone work. I’d like to practice bonsai more. I’m terrible at grammar. I love holistic approaches, but loathe buzzwords and “internet experts”. I could spend less money on crystals. I should do more yoga. I am meditating more. I get angry at Terry Gross, but then fall back in love each week. Reality TV shows are a must. Woodford on the rocks with a twist and a cherry. Hip hop keeps me human. Kale is king.

Why write this? Because I want to remember and reflect on the time I spend with plants.

Ok. Here we go.

Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 – HMB

I’m feeling the winter-y itch of wanting to prune everything down…

Must not prune anything!

Friday, October 23rd, 2015 – HMB

Arrg. I pruned a little bit last night… a salvia.

But I’m stopping. I’m really stopping.

Saturday, October 24th, 2015 – HMB, San Mateo

Matt bought us more horse troughs for the garden! We spent the day putting roses in a one giant trough… which I’m so looking forward to in Spring/Summer!

Sunday, October 25th, 2015 – HMB

When I watch a movie where someone is deeply smelling a flower that I know has no fragrance (or no fragrance that can be detected very easily), I get very, very angry.

Where is the fucking continuity person in charge of this?

Monday, October 26th, 2015 -HMB, Hillsborough

I did a podcast interview today for a gardening podcast! It’s beyond fun to blab about how much I love plants. Unabashedly continuing to talk even thought I could tell they were winding down and wanted me to wrap up. Such fun.

Tuesday, October 27th, 2015 – HMB, Hillsborough

Planting some gorgeous 15 gallon Agave ‘Nova’ today…

Wednesday, October 28th, 2015 – HMB, San Mateo

My Crocus Sativus are sprouting! They are pretty germinating a little more sporadically then I’d like, but whatevs.

Thursday, October 29th, 2015 – HMB, Pacifica

A big meeting in Pacifica today to go over my new ventures come Spring… well they will be launched in Spring, but all the work needs to be done now. Like, right now.

Friday, October 30th, 2015 – HMB

An even bigger meeting – that went fantastic! Closer and closer to spreading much more plant nerdiness around the world! I quickly went from being nervous about not being able to do something, to now nervous about having to actually do what I set out to do! I love how the mind can fuck you over so well!

Saturday, October 31st, 2015 – HMB, San Mateo

The farmers market this time of year is fucking incredible. I’m eager to find Buddha Hand Lemons, but haven’t seen them yet this year. I may be about 2 weeks early…

Sunday, November 1st, 2015 – HMB

I worked in the shop for a bit on this fine fall day. Lovely crisp cold weather outside makes it easy to spend more and more time inside the shop instead of mucking in the chilly garden. Water this time of year can be brutal. The worst is when you pick up a hose nozzle, turn it on, then the fucker sprays out all over you because its connected wrong.

Monday, November 2nd, 2015 – HMB

I went to a garden consultation in Miramar today, and when I arrived my new client had a freshly made green smoothie for me. We had never met – and she handed me a smoothie.

There are lots of great perks in this job.

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015 – HMB, Hillsborough

The Monterey Cypress trees this time of year are gorgeous. The dust on the leaves has gone to the lower parts from the recent rain, making the top foliage bright green. And when 2pm hits, it’s an entire afternoon of moody shadows against the tree’s architecture.

I need more time to just drive around and see the coast during the day.

So. Tired. This. Week.
