Woohoo, it’s Fall! Weeks 38 + 39!
New to this page or missed some of Plants 365 and want to catch up? I recommend starting from the beginning with week 1.
Hi! I’m Jenn – botanist, CEO, potty mouth.
This is my “plant diary”, where every day for the entire year I will log my experience with plants. I’m not sure what that’s actually going to look like, but it doesn’t really matter – I just want to talk plants.
But first, here’s a little context about me: I fucking love Champagne. I don’t really like reading fiction but can digest it in the podcast form. I listen, read and observe a lot. I happily overeat carbs. I call myself a botanist because I have been a professional (as in, I pay my bills by) horticulturist for the past 15 years. The past 4+ years I have been researching plants with indigenous Mayan and Garifuna cultures in Belize – mostly focusing on organically farmed Cacao theobroma and jungle-grown Yam root. This means lots of time spent working on family farms, lots of jungle hikes, lots of eating weird things and even a bot fly in the arm (I dare you to google bot fly). Vanilla planifolia and Crocus sativus are my jam right now. My hands-on background is florals, farming, herbalism, horticulture and jungle growth. I’ve dabbled in greenhouse growing (3 years in community college, greenhouse management degree), grafting and stone work. I’d like to practice bonsai more. I’m terrible at grammar. I love holistic approaches, but loathe buzzwords and “internet experts”. I could spend less money on crystals. I should do more yoga. I am meditating more. I get angry at Terry Gross, but then fall back in love each week. Reality TV shows are a must. Woodford on the rocks with a twist and a cherry. Hip hop keeps me human. Kale is king.
Why write this? Because I want to remember and reflect on the time I spend with plants.
Ok. Here we go.
Thursday, September 24th, 2015 – HMB, Pacifica
Sorrel finally got her last set of shots today! I’m so excited to get out and walk this beast!
I want to spend some time just driving around Pacifica one day – one foggy day. I want to see the local architecture, other people’s gardens, the branches, the trees, the wild grasses that grow on the cliffs. I want to just take pictures after pictures of the bluffs. I know I’m supposed to hate the Pampas grass, but they are so lovely this time of year.

I made the mistake of trying to jog with Sorrel today… that was interesting.
Brugmansia is still in bloom… and the sunflowers are up and opening.

Doing some plant buying today… stipa, senecio, weeping ver. confier (for containers), dudleya.
I’m debating on going out and clipping some budding Pampas grass for wreaths or swags. I think if I gather them immature, then I think they won’t fall out and spread…

I haven’t had even one really, really, really good tomatoes this year. WTF.
Wednesday, September 30th, 2015 – HMB
My ‘Roma’ tomatoes were a real bust this year. They produced, but rotted at the top… I over watered, most likely. Fuck Romas.
Thursday, October 1st, 2015 – HMB
Getting ready to head out for the weekend… I need to water my pots. Sorrel chewed the new ($29.95) hose nozzle so the whole thing sprays funky. She has bits of black plastic falling out of her mouth like a fool. The other dogs look at her like she’s psychotic.
The trough veggies are doing fairly well… but it seems like they are getting too much sun from the metal or the window reflected sunlight hitting them. Not sure what’s up with that. Maybe that’s why the Romas were bullshit this year.
Friday, October 2nd, 2015 – HMB, Carmel
Heading to Carmel with Matt for our 1 year wedding anniversary! I can’t believe it’s been 1 year… I feel like the post-traumatic stress is finally gone from planning the wedding. #family
Our big plan for this weekend is eating and drinking. French. All French.
Saturday, October 3rd, 2015 – Carmel
Today, someone said I look like a celebrity while I was sipping champagne at a wine bar on Ocean Ave.
My day is complete.
Champagne grapes are a good invention.
Sunday, October, 4th, 2015 – Carmel, HMB
The Oak trees at OMI are outstanding… albeit dry. They are full with acorns and I can’t help but scour the ground to find the little fallen caps. I want like, 1 million acorns.
Monday, October 5th, 2015 – HMB
Did some fun planting shopping last week and my orders are coming in… I love organizing them on my driveway. You can really exercise your OCD tenancies when organizing plants.
Later in the morning I took a bunch of selfies in the garden.

At a job in HMB doing landscaping. Replacing another landscaping company’s design – the 16th I have done this year! I won’t say the name of the company, but it rhymes with “Who Fly” and is super pricey. This one today was only installed 2 years ago!
I mostly am doing a bunch of editing and shuffling. I’m adding Stipa ichu (my obsession this year) in the entire front.

The job is going well… pulling out a ton of plants that have no root growth… possibly due to mushed up gopher baskets? We were cleaning up against the neighbors border – weeds spilling over and spreading a ton of seeds and leaf debris. The neighbor made a point to come over and tell us not to touch their weeds.
No prob, asshole. No prob.
