Summer is almost over! Fucking nuts! Weeks 35 and 36…
New to this page or missed some of Plants 365 and want to catch up? I recommend starting from the beginning with week 1.
Hi! I’m Jenn – botanist, CEO, potty mouth.
This is my “plant diary”, where every day for the entire year I will log my experience with plants. I’m not sure what that’s actually going to look like, but it doesn’t really matter – I just want to talk plants.
But first, here’s a little context about me: I fucking love Champagne. I don’t really like reading fiction but can digest it in the podcast form. I listen, read and observe a lot. I happily overeat carbs. I call myself a botanist because I have been a professional (as in, I pay my bills by) horticulturist for the past 15 years. The past 4+ years I have been researching plants with indigenous Mayan and Garifuna cultures in Belize – mostly focusing on organically farmed Cacao theobroma and jungle-grown Yam root. This means lots of time spent working on family farms, lots of jungle hikes, lots of eating weird things and even a bot fly in the arm (I dare you to google bot fly). Vanilla planifolia and Crocus sativus are my jam right now. My hands-on background is florals, farming, herbalism, horticulture and jungle growth. I’ve dabbled in greenhouse growing (3 years in community college, greenhouse management degree), grafting and stone work. I’d like to practice bonsai more. I’m terrible at grammar. I love holistic approaches, but loathe buzzwords and “internet experts”. I could spend less money on crystals. I should do more yoga. I am meditating more. I get angry at Terry Gross, but then fall back in love each week. Reality TV shows are a must. Woodford on the rocks with a twist and a cherry. Hip hop keeps me human. Kale is king.
Why write this? Because I want to remember and reflect on the time I spend with plants.
Ok. Here we go.

Took Sorrel to get her second round of shots…
My Roses are super happy this late Summer… normally they give a big flush of blooms around October, but it’s starting early this year. I’m thinking I need to do my normal Winter pruning later then usual. I planted some seeds of Sunflower ‘Mammoth’ and they are coming up pretty nice… about 5 feet tall but the buds are just a half-dollar size (do you kids even know what those are?)… I was expecting them to be further developed by now. I guess I planted late…

In the shop…

Free Day!!! Today I plan to spend the day drunk. Plus! It’s a BAPPS party… off to set up the garden for my plant dork friends.
Sunday, September 6th, 2015 – HMB
The BAPPS BBQ was so much fun! I love this group of stone cold plant dorks… Lithops, chrysalis, butterflies and ribs were plentiful at the party. The puppy got some great people exposure, too. Megan gave me a Peyote plant! #trippyman

Labor Day and I am doing nothing… except finding beer bottles in the garden.
Tuesday, September 8th, 2015 – HMB
Today we are planting a hillside garden that is super steep. I love using wattle – it makes the plants seem so important! I planted a simple blend of natives and drought tolerant shrubs. It’ll look good in about a year.

Doing maintenance at a job where the person never (and I mean never) cares for their garden on their own, is frustrating. I’m done with doing jobs like this. I only want to work for people who actually want to see the garden thrive.

Day off! (ish.)
Friday, September 11th, 2015 – HMB, SF
In shop… then played in the garden in the afternoon. Had awesome Japanese food in SF with Matt and some friends and contemplated how I can use Kelp more in the product line. TBD.

Pop-up event in the shop today… went really well. Not huge in sales, but it was nice getting more people out to explore the shop. Catherine was there selling her pottery, as was Teri with Half Moon Honey. Her Lavender honey is always my favorite.

A lovely, relaxing day with my hubby. xo
Monday, September 14th, 2015 – HMB
Today I am trying to map the week out so I can just focus on Garden Apothecary. I want to redo the plant displays, pot up some succulents (‘Lola’!!!), dry some herbs and make products all week. I planted more burning Sage, so next year I can make my very own smudging sticks. Wouldn’t it be awesome ot have an acre of Sage?

Squeezed one tiny planting job in today… among redoing the website, blogging, managing the girls at the shop, etc. ‘Iceburg’ Roses are so easy to get sick of, but they really do grow so incredibly well on the Coast. At this point of the year and into the drought, anything that grows and blooms profusely is my friend.
Next year I need to stop stock piling bare-root Roses when they come into season… I just sold my last two I was holding at my house – and it’s fucking Sept.! I couldn’t have made any money on those… however I do want to find some Hellebrous plugs to pot up into 5 gallons… I’m going to hold off on bearded Iris, I think.

I have spent the whole week solely working on Garden Apothecary. Every once in a while, it’s nice to get out of other people’s gardens and just stay home and hone my own. I’ve been adding to the website, tweaking products and am in the midst of launching 8 new GA products! Super excited.
These are my muses this Fall and Winter.
