Plants 365, week 34

Week 34 – puppy, puppy, puppy. Plants!

New to this page or missed some of Plants 365 and want to catch up? I recommend starting from the beginning with week 1.

Hi! I’m Jenn – botanist, CEO, potty mouth.

This is my “plant diary”, where every day for the entire year I will log my experience with plants. I’m not sure what that’s actually going to look like, but it doesn’t really matter – I just want to talk plants.

But first, here’s a little context about me: I fucking love Champagne. I don’t really like reading fiction but can digest it in the podcast form. I listen, read and observe a lot. I happily overeat carbs. I call myself a botanist because I have been a professional (as in, I pay my bills by) horticulturist for the past 15 years. The past 4+ years I have been researching plants with indigenous Mayan and Garifuna cultures in Belize – mostly focusing on organically farmed Cacao theobroma and jungle-grown Yam root. This means lots of time spent working on family farms, lots of jungle hikes, lots of eating weird things and even a bot fly in the arm (I dare you to google bot fly). Vanilla planifolia and Crocus sativus are my jam right now. My hands-on background is florals, farming, herbalism, horticulture and jungle growth. I’ve dabbled in greenhouse growing (3 years in community college, greenhouse management degree), grafting and stone work. I’d like to practice bonsai more. I’m terrible at grammar. I love holistic approaches, but loathe buzzwords and “internet experts”. I could spend less money on crystals. I should do more yoga. I am meditating more. I get angry at Terry Gross, but then fall back in love each week. Reality TV shows are a must. Woodford on the rocks with a twist and a cherry. Hip hop keeps me human. Kale is king.

Why write this? Because I want to remember and reflect on the time I spend with plants.

Ok. Here we go.

Thursday, August 20th, 2015 – HMB

God damn this puppy is a lot of fucking work!

Meanwhile… the Casablanca Lilies are so gorgeous and still in bloom. I thought the fragrance would be stronger outside, but it’s pretty light. The Brugmansia is much, much stronger in scent.

Friday, August 21st, 2015 – HMB

This whole week we have been puppy-tending and making 700 Jasmine + Bergamot + Violet Leaf Bath Teas to True & Co, in Indiana. This was such an ordeal – but luckily Erica and Juan Carlos – who normally do gardening with me, are making bath teas! It’s a pretty funny site.

Pallets are stacked. Peanuts are flying. Tape is screeching out of the dispenser every 40 seconds.

Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 – HMB

Last night I gardened until sunset… listened to The Horror. I moved around my potted plants, swept and pulled the dead flowers. Since I don’t have a ton of dirt space, everything is in pots. I’m trying to just plant 1 plant in each pot – instead of my normal 3-4. I want is more beachy, a tiny bit minimal (in comparison to what I normally do). I used some driftwood and some gorgeous Stipa. I also found a few varieties of Artemesia that I am excited about. I love that dusty blue color in the fog…

Sunday, August 23rd, 2015 – HMB, Oakland

Such a fun time in Oakland… I love driving through neighborhoods I have never been before.

When I was little, my stepmom and I used to get milkshakes and drive around neighborhoods and housing developments. She would slow down and we would talk about the things we liked or disliked about the houses. Mostly chatting about what we would do to them if they were ours. I’d feel sad for the trees or roses that were unwatered and unloved. She’s talk about paint colors and driveway cobbles.

Monday, August 24th, 2015 – HMB

Planted some shrubs for beneficial insects… job in HMB.

Tuesday, August 25th, 2015 – HMB, Burlingame

Planted a fun balcony container garden… great selection of plants. I need to remember to photograph in the Winter or Spring. We had to bring all the materials up in an elevator.

Wednesday, August 26th, 2015 – HMB

Not much…

Thursday, August 27th, 2015 – HMB, San Francisco

Got an amazing facial and spent about 30 minutes smelling the difference between Rose and Bulgarian Rose. Fascinating.

Went home to the puppy – who is somehow getting more and more adorable every single hour.

Friday, August 28th, 2015 – HMB

Worked in the shop and schlepped plants around in the outside garden.

Saturday, August 29th, 2015 – HMB

Today I visited my friend Joanne at Tunitas Creek Family Farm – a place I’ve known well since I was about 19 years old. It was wonderful to eat, talk shop and walk around the gorgeous property. Being there reminds me of my goals – and makes me nostalgic, since those goals were established when I was pretty young.

I miss farming.

Sunday, August 30th, 2015 – HMB

A hike with Corina and Erin turned into a walk at the beach (Tunitas Creek) and watching moronic hipsters schlepping their wares back up the cliff after a rave the night before. Apparently I now live in a town where there are raves at the beach. When the fuck did this start?

Monday, August 31st, 2015 – HMB

This week we have a big planting at the Dean’s – a treat for all of us, since we all love to work on that property.

Puppy ate the outside couch cushion.

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015 – HMB

I’m finally seeing the soil change after years of adding compost to this ground (Dean’s). I planted Lavender today and amended nothing! #Cray

The puppyis shredding my variegated dwarf Bamboo.

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015 – HMB

Still planting and trimming at the Dean’s… here’s the list, for the most part:

– Lavender ‘Munstead’

– Lavender ‘Grosso’

– Dudleya

– Olive ‘Lil Ollie’

– Sedum (the small bright green kind)

– white Heliotrope (which hates being dead headed by the way. I have never met a plant that doesn’t respond well to dad heading, but Heliotrope is the first!)
